When we begin to realize that God takes great delight in us, and that we are a unique creation of God, there is a quiet confidence that comes from knowing this.  We can rest in knowing that we are becoming the person that God created us to be, that we are being transformed into the image of His Son Jesus Christ.  It’s not that we don’t care what people think of us, it is that we don’t live our lives based on that.  The knowledge that we are unique, and that God takes delight in us, gives us a freedom to be the person He created us to be.

Eric Liddell (of “Chariots of Fire” fame) understood this concept better than I believe most people do.  He was quoted as saying “God made me fast.  And, when I run, I feel his pleasure.”  Running is not a particularly “spiritual” endeavor, but Eric Liddell understood that God has made each of us unique, and that He takes pleasure in those things that make us unique-our personality, our talents and skills, and all the experiences we have had that make us who we are today.
